No matter what the season, a consistent and effective skin care regimen can be difficult to perfect. Sensitive skin can be even more tricky — skin that gets red, irritated, has rough patches, and can even be accompanied by rashes, swelling, and itchiness. In summer, the heat of the sun and powerful UV rays can exacerbate skin causing issues such as burns, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. The two major goals of any summer skincare regime should be to protect and calm this delicate skin. Here are a few things to help you enjoy the summer and still keep skin healthy and cool while the sun is heating things up.
Use a Gentle Cleanser
Ditch harsh soaps or cleansers for those that are more gentle and soothing. Look for non-foaming creams or light washes. Look for ingredients like aloe, chamomile, calendula extracts, and vitamin E. These ingredients won’t irritate skin, especially those with extra sensitive skin, and will calm any redness and irritation.
Add a Toner
If you don’t already have one in your regimen, add a toner. Toners balance your skin’s pH (the best pH for skin is around 5.5) and hydrate the skin. Toners also make skin feel refreshed and clean. They also exfoliate to reveal fresh, luminous skin while calming and soothing the skin.
Switch Up Your Moisturizer
Using the right moisturizer can save your skin from the woes that come with warm-weather such as heat-triggered rosacea, uneven skin tone, and control uneven pigmentation that steals the spotlight during summer. For those with sensitive skin, a lightweight lotion with ingredients like vitamin B5, niacinamide, and ceramides can both calm and fortify delicate skin. Gel-like formations are also ideal as they absorb quickly and result in bouncy skin.
Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen!
One of the most important steps is to apply sunscreen. While it can be easy to do in the morning as part of your morning ritual, remember you need to reapply throughout the day. Broad spectrum sunscreens protect against both the UVB rays that cause sunburns and the UVA rays that lead to the signs of aging skin—dryness, brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles and eventually sagging.
Acne can be especially tricky during the summer. Heat and humidity cause an increase in oil production, but the sun can dry out skin, which can mean more acne. If you find yourself having more acne than usual in the summer, switch from your regular calming toner to complexion renewal pads. They help with breakouts and don’t dry out your skin.
The sins of sun’s past show up on our skin as freckles and brown spots. To minimize hyperpigmentation, try using skin brighteners. Our office recommends several products including Melamin, Melamix, Vitamin C serums, Brightalive and of course, a quality SPF.
